Dr Chan is a graduate of the University of Sydney from which she was awarded the degrees of Bachelor of Science (Medicine) (Honours) and Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS).
She subsequently obtained a Masters of Public Health from the University of New South Wales before moving to Melbourne to commence her ophthalmology training at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. She undertook further training in the United Kingdom for two years, including a fellowship at St Thomas’ Hospital, London before returning to the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in 2010 to complete a cornea fellowship.
As well as working at the Doncaster Eye Centre, Dr Chan currently works as a Staff Specialist at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, and has a particular interest in corneal disorders and cataract surgery. She is also an Honorary Fellow with the Centre for Eye Research Australia and University of Melbourne and is involved in numerous research projects relating to corneal diseases, with a particular interest in keratoconus. She is an author for several book chapters and has published numerous papers in scientific journals, and regularly presents her research at national and international conferences.
