A/Prof Elaine Chong is Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Melbourne. She is the Head of Department for Ophthalmology at the Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH), and a consultant in both the corneal & retinal units at the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital (RVEEH). A/Prof Chong is a dual fellowship-trained ophthalmologist, who completed sub-specialty fellowship training in Medical Retina at the RVEEH, and Corneal, Cataract & Refractive Surgery at the Singapore National Eye Centre.
A/Prof Chong is a Fellow of the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (FRANZCO) and Fellow of the Academy of Medicine Singapore (FAMS). She was awarded the Gold Medal for Excellence at the RANZCO Advanced Clinical Exams in 2011. This single medal is awarded to the most outstanding candidate in the final exit examinations across Australia & New Zealand for the year.
A/Prof Chong holds a PhD and Masters of Epidemiology from the University of Melbourne. Research work from her PhD was selected out of over 6000 submitted papers as one of the 40 newest and most innovative research conducted in the main ophthalmic international research conference in USA (ARVO, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology). She has over 45 publications and book chapters. She was one of the winners of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) global video contest for her work on Corneal transplantation: Descemet’s Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) insertion technique in 2018. Her work on DMEK was awarded the Best Surgical Video at the RANZCO conference and her award-winning technique of pterygium surgery was featured internationally in the AAO One Network.
A/Prof Chong is a clinical trial investigator at the Centre for Eye Research Australia, and is the principal investigator for the treatment of Fuchs’ Endothelial Dystrophy (DWEK/DSO) trial. She is on the editorial board of the Clinical & Experimental Ophthalmology journal and sits in the RANZCO Victorian Branch committee and Australia New Zealand Cornea Society Executive committee.
A/Prof Chong is a registered ophthalmology specialist practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. A/Prof Chong is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, International Society of Refractive Surgery, Cornea Society, Asian Cornea Society, the Australia Medical Association, the Australian and New Zealand Society of Retinal Specialists, the Australian Society of Ophthalmologists, the Oceania Retinal Association, the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology, and the Australian Chinese Medical Association Victoria.
