Dr Alexander Poon is an Eye Surgeon (ophthalmologist) who specializes in anterior segment (front of the eye) surgery which includes, but is not limited to cataract surgery, corneal transplantation, laser refractive surgery and pterygium surgery. He performs Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery (LACS), as well as traditional phacoemulsification cataract surgery. He also treats patients with ocular surface problems such as keratoconus, corneal infections, ocular surface malignancies and contact lens related problems.
He graduated from the University of Melbourne Medical School in 1990. Following graduation, he undertook general ophthalmology training at the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital (RVEEH). This was followed by a senior registrar year at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney. He then subsequently trained in anterior segment surgery and ocular surface disease at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. He has published multiple papers on corneal and external eye diseases.
He is currently a consultant at the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital and has private practices in East Melbourne (Lansdowne Eye Clinic) and Hawthorn (Hawthorn Eye Clinic). He is actively involved in the teaching of ophthalmology registrars and corneal fellows through the RVEEH. He has been invited by the Ophthalmology Associations, College of Optometry, General Practitioner and Pharmacy groups on multiple occasions, to speak on ocular surface disorders. Besides English, Dr Poon can conduct his consultations in Cantonese. He also has staff members who speak Cantonese, Mandarin, Arabic, Spanish and Italian.
